The Vancouver Canucks move one game closer to a Western Conference final appearance and take a 3-2 lead over the Edmonton Oilers. A new-look throughout the bottom 9 forwards showed a lot more jump than last game and Arturs Silovs was solid in net again, holding the Oilers to just 2 goals, thanks in large part to J.T. Miller holding Connor McDavid to just 2 shots and the PK going an incredible 5 for 5. The Canucks need to win one of their next 2 to move on.

Vancouver came out on top 4-1, which seems to make sense, given where the teams are at in the standings, but doesn't make sense is where the goals were coming from!!! Not a single point from any of the Canucks top 5 scorers and all the points coming from unexpected places with 2 goals for Zadorov, 2 assists for Mikheyev, goals from Garland and Åman and single pts for Podkolzin, Lafferty, Lindholm and Blueger. Canucks start to build another win streak as they coast towards the playoffs.

POST-GAME: Vancouver Canucks vs Buffalo Sabres (March 19, 2024)

The Canucks looked to end a 2 game losing skid against the Buffalo Sabres in game number 69 of the regular season. Elias Pettersson has also been struggling of late, but both problems came to an end tonight, as EP40 put up 2 goals and an assist, to go along with a couple of assists each from JT MIller and Quinn Hughes. Casey DeSmith gets off the schneid, stopping 15 of 17 shots for the win.

POST-GAME: Vancouver Canucks vs Washington Capitals (March 16, 2024)

The Canucks looked to bounce back from a loss against Colorado against a much easier team in the Washington Capitals. However, the Great 8 Alex Ovechkin, had other plans as he scored the game winner to hand the Canucks their second straight loss since Thatcher Demko got hurt. Pettersson was a no show again and coach Tocchet got the line blender out, but to no avail. In the end, it was a 2-1 loss for the Canucks.

JT Miller stormed out of the gates tonight, with a goal and an assist within the first few minutes of the game. However, it was all downhill from there, JT Miller took a hit to the head and missed half a period in the quiet room, he would ultimately return to the game, no worse for wear, but the Av's scored 4 straight to take the Canucks 4-3 in overtime.

POST-GAME: Vancouver Canucks vs Winnipeg Jets (March 10, 2024)

The two top goalies in the Vezina race faced off in Vancouver tonight, as the Winnipeg Jets came to town to face the Canucks. In the end there were 2 Vezina caliber goalies in this game, but they were both on the Canucks!!! After a stellar start, Demko mysteriously pulled himself from the game before the halfway mark of the second period, however, Casey DeSmith kept the shutout intact for the second half of the game. Hoglander with another even strength goal, and Hughes looking back in full Norris form. Canucks shut out the Jets 5-0.

The Canucks looked to complete the sweep of the western US road trip against the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Vancouver kept up the tight D, again only allowing 1 goal against, for the 3rd straight game. The sky is officially falling, and Jeff Paterson was on site at Climate Pledge Arena to see it live. Sure, Vancouver is still in first place overall in the NHL, but the team is definitely in need of some re-alignment as Vancouver loses a 4th straight tonight in Seattle. JT Miller opened the scoring tonight and it was all downhill from there. Connor Garland even tried to fight Brandon Tanev to get his team going, and that was a brutal fail as well. Canucks will host Boston back at home for an early game on Saturday and look to put an end to their first real losing skid of the season.

The Red Wings flew into town to face the Canucks for the 2nd time in a week and the Vancouver did everything they could to make sure Detroit had nothing to dance about in this one. Led by the Swedish touch of Pettersson, Lindholm and Hoglander offensively and Demko with another Vezina caliber performance. Nikita Zadorov hled down the physical end of things and also chipped in a goal. At the end of 60 mins it was Big Z who Griddy'd his way out of the rink on this one, as the Canucks win 4-1.

Ovechkin found the back of the net for the 5th game in a row, but the Canucks managed to come out on top 3-2. Hoglander had a beauty and JT Miller finished it off with the game winner, while Thatcher Demko was Vezina worthy, as usual.

The Canucks woke us West Coasters up early today as they motored into to Detroit to try to make up for getting hammered against Boston. Detroit struck first, but Vancouver came out hard in the second with a big response to go up 3-1. As we have come to know, there's 2 things the Canucks never do: one is blow leads in the 3rd period, and the other is lose 2 games in a row... well, scrap that idea, as Detroit answered back with 2 goals in the 3rd, followed by another in OT to beat the Canucks 4-3 in overtime.

It was a game of the good, the bad and the ugly, as the Canucks fell to an early 4-1 deficit to the Columbus Blue Jackets. No lead is too big when you've got a heated Brock Boeser though. Brock netted a hat trick to bring the Canucks back to evens, and then Petey was able to put it away in overtime...which means the Canucks head into the All-Star break atop the NHL standings.

POST-GAME: Vancouver Canucks vs St Louis Blues (Jan 24, 2024)

It was an up and down battle at Rogers Arena as the Canucks fell behind by 2 twice, and came back both times, only to lose in overtime. The offense came from one place and one place only tonight and that was of course, Pius Suter??? Suter scored all 3 goals for the Canucks tonight, 2 of which were set up by Captain Quinn, who extends his lead atop the D scoring race in the NHL. And also yes, there was a benching in the 3rd period, but this time it was not Kuzmenko, but Nikita Zadorov. After being slow on a couple of coverages, Coach Tocchet decided to sit the big man down for the final 19 mins of the game. All things added up to a 4-3 loss to the STL Blues in overtime. The OT goal AGAIN came after a blatant missed crosscheck to Petey's back.

The Bedard-less Blackhawks visited Vancity tonight to try to keep pace with the League Leading Vancouver Canucks. The Hawks haven't won a road game in their last 18 tries, so on paper this should've been a walk in the park...but the Hawks outshot the Canucks, only to be blanked by Thatcher Demko. Kuzmenko looks to be finding his confidence again, as he picks up assists on both Canuck goals. And in the least shocking stat of the day, Quinn Hughes scored again, increasing his lead atop the NHL D scoring race.

The center of the hockey universe came to Vancouver tonight, as the Maple Leafs faced off against the Canucks. There were 10 All Stars in the game tonight, but it was the bottom 6 from Vancouver that was running the show, with 2 goals each from Nils Hoglander and Connor Garland. Demko did his part and stopped 42 of 46 to give them a chance. The power play found it's legs again, to help put them over the edge for a 6-4 win.

Well, it wasn't the most 'high event hockey', but the Canucks took care of what matters and put down the Coyotes 2-1. Kuzmenko spent the 3rd period on the bench again... while Dakota Joshua continued his career season with another game winning goal. Big Nikki Z took care of business and handily won a fight when Arizona started to take runs at some of the Canucks players. Demko held it down again, allowing only 1 goal over his last 2 games.

After much travel difficulty, the Canucks were finally in Columbus to close out their long road trip. Vancouver came out flying, but the lack of rest caught up to them in the end. The Canucks took a trip to New Jersey for chapter 2 of Lollapa-Hughes-a, and with Jack out of the Devils lineup, Quinn looked to take advantage. The Canucks captain delivered with 3 points and a very dominant first 45 mins, fueled further by the re-uniting of the Lotto Line (Boeser, Petey, Miller), the big guns contributed to the majority of the Canucks offense on this night. Demko started strong, but he speed wobbled with the rest of the team for a few mins in the 3rd period that almost allowed the Devils to comeback in this one, but nope... the Demko hung on to get his 100th career win.

Vancouver stormed out for 5 goals against our nations capital in the first period, then coasted their way to a 6-3 final. Petey was all over the both ends of the ice for his best game in a long time and Pius Suter scored a couple of goals, including one which was 'very Bieksa'...

The Broad St Bullies came to town for the Canucks last game of 2023, and the Flyers were the better team on this night. The first period was scoreless, but Philly came on strong in the 2nd with 3 quick goals to put Vancouver back on their heels. Teddy Blueger scored in the 3rd and it looked like the Canucks might mount a comeback, but the Flyers again clapped back with a shorty from Garnett Hathaway to put a dagger into the Canucks to win 4-1.

Twas the night before the night before Xmas and the SJ Sharks were in town to wrap up the season series against the Canucks before the NHL takes it's 3 day holiday break. There were a lot of goals on not a lot of shots for both teams, as the Canucks take it by a score of 7-4 on a night that saw Kuzmenko re-united with Petey and Mikayev and wouldn't you know it, he scores 2 goals and can head into Xmas with a smile on his face and a monkey off his back.

The Vancouver Canucks head into the holiday break 1st place in the NHL.

The Canucks hit the road to take on the Wild for the second time in very recent memory and this time was again, very uneventful. Casey DeSmith played a fantastic game, stopping 30 of 31 shots on goal, but the Wild goaltender was also great, stopping 34 of 35 Canucks and hanging on to take the W home for the Wild in the first Canuck shootout of the season. Vancouver will get a chance to bounce back tomorrow in another matinee game against Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Luuuuuuuu! Roberto Luongo was back in town to see his space unveiled in the Ring of Honour. As always, the ceremony was great and Lu did not disappoint on the mic. But the good vibes belonged to the Canucks for the rest of the night as they beat up the Panthers 4-0 behind a couple of Dakota Joshua goals and another from Andrei Kuzmenko...and what would a night be without a Brock Boeser goal. Demko did his best Bobby Lu impression and stopped all 36 Florida shots for the shutout.

Tampa Bay visited Rogers arena with Nikita Kucherov leading the league in scoring and several Canucks in hot pursuit. Vancouver looked to continue their winning ways and after Tampa jumped out to an early lead, Kuzmenko evened the score, which was a huge monkey off his back. That was followed by a whole lotta Brock. Boeser had a hat trick to move into the league lead in goals, while Captain Quinn added 3 primary assists to move into the league lead in assists. After oening the scoring the Lightning failed to strike a second time as Demko continued his Vezina-like ways, putting up a .966 sv% against a potentially devastating offense.

It was a very quiet night for Captain Quinn, but Petey found his game again tonight, getting in on 3 of the Canucks goals. JT Miller had a great night and Nils Hoglander continued to impress. It was a tight game as Carolina constantly threatened to tie it up, but in the end, Demko was able to hold it together for the 4-3 win.

News coming out of Montreal on Monday morning, as the Canadiens announced that they inked 2019 15th overall pick Cole Caufield to an 8-year, $62.5 million dollar contract extension. The boys wonder just what the ceiling will be for the young Russian, while lamenting over the fact that Vancouver had the chance to draft Caufield or Matt Boldy, who went one pick after Podkolzin to Minnesota.

No Worlds For Elias Pettersson

Unfortunate news came out of Sweden, as it's being reported that the Swedish Hockey Federation was unable to secure insurance for Elias Pettersson to be able to play for his native country at the World Hockey Championship in Finland and Latvia next month. JPat and Wadden discuss what that means for Pettersson, while also unpacking the NHL's announcement of the teams that will play in the Global Series next year in Stockholm, which surprisingly does not include the Canucks. They also got over former Canucks defenceman Christian Ehrhoff returning to play pro hockey in the second division in the DEL in Germany. Ehrhoff, 41, hasn't played pro since the 2017-18 season.

This week marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of Vancouver sports media legend Jason Botchford. JPat reflects on his time spent travelling North America covering the Canucks with Botch.
